"This company does not foresee growth in this industry for 2002 basically because it is felt that the telecommunications sector, which primes the industry's pump, is stagnant and is likely to remain so until the privatisation issue is settled."
So says Craig Hemmes, Managing Director, Memec South Africa, who tells Dataweek that apart from this, an industry such as electronics does not remain static and opportunities will be found in such areas as security, automotive and industrial application sectors.
He adds: "From a component distributor perspective, this means that business will have to be sought from a wide range of smaller manufacturers who in turn will be in a position to impose greater demands on us."
"This will not be a year to relax at any time," concludes Hemmes.
