HIV/AIDS educational tool developed at university

An HIV/AIDS educational CD, developed by the University of Pretoria's Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Telematic Learning and Education Innovation, and the Centre for the Study of AIDS, was recently presented to about 300 third- and fourth-year Engineering students.
This CD was created so that the University of Pretoria can use it as a generic HIV/AIDS educational tool. Its development was initiated by the control group of the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, as part of its programme for the modelling and control of HIV/AIDS. Control group leader, Prof I.K. Craig, and Ms I. le Roux from Telematic Learning and Education Innovation, acted as project leaders for the CD's development.

The inclusion of a mathematical model that describes the time evolution of healthy CD4 cells, infected CD4 cells, and the virus load, makes this CD of special interest to engineers. This model is packaged as a Java Applet, which allows the user of the CD to view the time evolution of the model outputs in graphical form. Model parameters can be adjusted by choosing different AIDS treatments and the effects of such treatments can be seen in the model outputs.
