Milestone for Landis+Gyr in eThekwini

13 August 2003 News

The supply of the 100 000th Cashpower Gemini prepayment electricity meter by Landis+Gyr to the eThekwini Municipality (formerly the City of Durban) was celebrated at a recent event with the presentation of a glass Gemini meter and a goodwill contribution to the city's project for the homeless by Landis+Gyr CEO, Keith Lennox.

The impact of Landis+Gyr's Cashpower metering systems on the poor sectors of the city's population is far-reaching, as Howard Whitehead, head of electricity for eThekwini Municipality, explains: "We have been committed to and busy with the electrification of previously disadvantaged communities for the last 10 years. There are some 170 000 prepayment meters in use in our area and it was a significant achievement when we installed the 100 000th Cashpower Gemini meter, especially since that system was first developed for use in eThekwini."

The Cashpower Gemini split meter system has provided ease of use for consumers as well as protection against illegal use for the utility. It also plays a key role in enabling the distribution of the free electricity quota for economically-disadvantaged users which came into effect this year.

"Our partnership with our customer over the last several years has enabled us to create a quality solution that meets all their needs," comments Iqbal Ganie, regional sales manager responsible for the supply of Cashpower Gemini meters to the municipality.

"Although we were the chosen supplier on the basis of technical and business considerations, this project - as one of our longest customer relationships - has also included a very rewarding involvement with the eThekwini Municipality's forward-looking policies for social upliftment and improvement of services for its poorest communities," he adds.
