Wireless OS turf war ensues over consumer and enterprise users

The proliferation of enhanced cellular handsets and 'Smartphones' has led to an increase in the number of new entries for wireless operating system (OS) and middleware vendors hoping to power every handset produced. Research firm ABI reports that the industry - which, as in the PC industry, has long resisted commoditisation - is now experiencing the beginnings of a confrontation between software providers and the ever-growing wireless companies.
According to a new research report on OS and middleware solutions for wireless devices, ABI says that while a plethora of newer platforms continues to emerge, it believes that developers will eventually embrace only one or two platforms that have a likelihood of attracting the attention of OEMs.
"Symbian will continue to be demanded by OEMs providing handsets to individuals," explains Kenil Vora, ABI analyst and report author. "Microsoft's mobile platform for Smartphones will be received with enthusiasm by the enterprise user segment, which is already familiar with Microsoft's other enterprise software offerings."
