Grintek expands into high-tech avionics communications

Grintek Communication Systems recently expanded its product range through a new communication management system for aircraft. The system has been designed and developed in South Africa for the international market and serves as yet another example of the high technology capabilities that exist in South Africa.
The new GUS1000 communication management system is a flexible control and display system for aircraft communications and radio navigation equipment and effectively integrates audio, data and intercom facilities with the rest of the avionics suite. Its features include the distribution of radio and intercom signals in the aircraft, control over communications and radio navigation equipment, management of data links to other aircraft/ground stations, digital recording and multiple redundancy modes.
"The GUS1000 is a logical step in our future business development. The flexible architecture of the system allows us to integrate not only our own radio products, but also to interface and control products from other reputable suppliers," said Vincent Scholtz, CEO of Grintek Communication Systems.
The heart of the system is based on a digital bus architecture, and various products from different OEMs can be connected through digital, analog and discrete interface modules. The man-machine interface is based on modular software and can be easily customised at low cost to meet specific client requirements according to Scholtz.
He adds that the key advantages of the product are its weight and size savings, as well as its low cost/performance ratio compared to more traditional solutions.
Grintek Communication Systems, which has a 49% shareholding with Saab of Sweden, has already concluded a number of international contracts for the GUS1000, on both fighter aircraft and helicopters and it is being officially launched at the DSEI show in London in September.
