Epcos developed an innovative transformer based on piezoelectric technology, which is extremely compact. The smallest sample has a footprint of only 1,2 x 1,2 mm. The transformer was designed for front-end modules in low-temperature cofired ceramic (LTCC) technology, which are used in mobile communication terminals. The ceramic transformer steps up the operating voltage of 1,2 V by a factor of 10, making it possible to drive extremely low-loss MEM switches for the duplexer.
The ceramic transformer works by converting the AC voltage applied at the input into a mechanical vibration by inverse piezoelectric effect. This is re-transformed at the output into a substantially higher AC voltage. The efficiency achieved is higher than magnetic transformers.
