Analog market significantly improved in 2003

10 March 2004 News

Databeans, a leading semiconductor market research group, has just released its 2003 data collection of analog market share. 2003 saw a definite improvement in analog market conditions. Strong growth in power management, mixed signal and wireless specific products helped advance the analog market up 12% in 2003. Databeans expects this trend to continue due to improved performance in the other application specific markets, which should pull the overall analog market up 18% this year.

Continued stabilisation in pricing combined with strong unit demand in several segments including amplifiers, wireless, mixed signal and interface provides healthy market conditions for analog suppliers. These players compete in a market where the top 10 control two thirds of the market.

Texas Instruments, with a complementary offering of application specific, high performance analog, and commodity analog, outperformed the industry. TI moves into the number one slot in the 2003 analog revenue ranking. The company increased analog revenue in 2003 by 13,1% over the prior year. STMicroelectronics slipped slightly to second place, with market share of 12,7%, just shy of Texas Instruments 12,9% share. Most of STMicroelectronics, Infineon, and Philips Semiconductors business is in the application specific market, a market that was up 7% in 2003, versus high performance and commodity analog, which increased 21% over the prior year.

Thanks to significant share in the analog wireless ASSP market, Infineon performed strong, up 33,3% in 2003. Toshiba is estimated by Databeans to have increased analog revenue by 17%. National Semiconductor, with a strong market position in power and amplifiers moves up from 6th place to 5th place in the ranking. National overtakes Philips Semiconductors, which is focused more on application specific products. Falling just outside the top 10, Linear Technology also turned in a significant growth figure, up 18,6% in 2003. Other strong performers, just outside the top 10 include Bosch and Rohm.
