Agreement with Microchip expands Arrow Altech Distribution's semiconductor portfolio

24 March 2004 News

Arrow Altech Distribution (AAD) has concluded a distribution agreement with Microchip Technology, a leading global provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors.

Effective 1 April 2004, the agreement incorporates Microchip's whole product line (with no exceptions) which consists of: PICmicro microcontrollers (MCUs); an extensive portfolio of analog/interface devices; high-endurance Serial EEPROMs; microlD RFID tags; KEELOQ security devices; and the recently announced dsPIC family of digital signal controllers.

GM for Marketing at AAD, Rodger Warren, says, "Microchip is a leading international brand with an excellent reputation in the local market. AAD represents a complementary portfolio of the foremost electronic component manufacturers in the world that covers semiconductors, passives, electromechanical, frequency and wireless products, and as such it was a logical progression to incorporate Microchip into our line card. We are very bullish and excited about this opportunity as Microchip expands our semiconductor portfolio and provides an added value offering of innovative semiconductor products to the South African market."

MD of AAD, Philip du Preez, says, "Albeit that the Microchip relationship with Arrow Altech will commence on 1 April, a strategic relationship with Arrow, our JV partner, has been in existence for a number of years already. To add Microchip to our product offering has been one of our strategic growth objectives and will most certainly assist us in further expanding our market share in the southern African region."

Local sales representative for Microchip, Willem Hijbeek from Tempe Technologies, believes that the distribution agreement between the two companies makes perfect business sense. He says, "Microchip is experiencing continued sales growth around the globe and Arrow Electronics is one of our worldwide partners. The fact that AAD is Arrow's South African business unit instils a high level of confidence in its expertise, infrastructure and ability to support Microchip's broad product line."

An important synergy between the two businesses is that both have clearly defined quality objectives. Microchip's quality system is based on the elements and criteria specified by QS 9000, the highest certification mandated by the world's major automotive customers. AAD is one of a select few South African companies certified to the new international quality management standard, ISO 9001:2000.
