First IPC training course held in SA

16 June 2004 News

The first IPC-A-610C instructor training in South Africa took place during April in Midrand. Presented by Master IPC Trainer Finn Skaanning from SQC in Denmark, the candidates attended four days of intense lectures on the content of the IPC-A-610C, with discussions on the upcoming revision. Included was the lead-free issue, a hot topic in Europe.

Candidates studied in the evenings and prepared work that was evaluated the next day. On the fifth day the examination took place. All candidates passed both the open-book and the closed-book examinations. All together, the examination comprises 100 questions with four possible answers to each question, and to achieve the certificate, candidates must have a minimum of 80% correct.

The candidates were Eddy Van den Wijngaerd, Orlando De Caires E Freitas and Rian Venter, and they are now titled as IPC-A-610C - CIT (Certified IPC Trainer). The third candidate, Rian Venter, also passed the examination as instructor on J-STD-001C, and is therefore also titled as J-STD-001C - CIT.

IPC was previously known as 'Institute of Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic Circuits'. IPC is a global member-driven organisation and leading source for industry standards, training, and market research for the electronic interconnection industry. The name IPC is now accompanied by the identity statement 'Association Connecting Electronics Industries'.

According to Skaanning there was much interest in the IPC training, but unfortunately the timing prevented many from attending. The next IPC training is scheduled for October/November this year, and already there is much interest.
