TV becomes 'communications centre'

Whereas the television of today is used almost exclusively for entertainment, the future will see them used for communication purposes thanks to Siemens-developed technology that enables users to surf the Web, send e-mails and SMS/MMS messages, make video calls using their TV and the telephone line, or even download the latest movies, music videos and games from the network.
With only a conventional DSL connection and a special television, Belgacom - Belgium's largest network operator - is launching an interactive digital television service. Belgacom will offer, among other things, video-on-demand, online games, electronic shopping and an expanded version of tele-text. The turnkey system installed by Siemens consists of a flat set-top box roughly the size of a notebook computer that is hooked up to the TV and the DSL jack. If necessary, it can also be linked to a PC, telephone or webcam.
Operating the system is easy, and once installed, users can take advantage of several features, including watching television while simultaneously discussing the events on-screen with a friend via videophone or e-mail. They can also access additional information online about the film being viewed. In order to watch a particular program at a later stage, a user need only click on the desired program with a remote control or hit a special key in the electronic program guide. The system can also store a particular program for later viewing.
Online services run over Internet protocol, and since the DSL system makes use of an existing infrastructure and has a modular design, it opens up new business possibilities for network operators to cooperate with television broadcasters in the area of interactive television, for example.
