Innovative ID card aids worker safety

6 October 2004 News

Already becoming a part of the UK armoury to address violence against lone workers and those in the frontline dealing with the public, a new device is at hand that not only enables the individual to covertly raise an alarm if threatened, but also allows a third party to listen to what is happening and record events whatever the distance.

Looking like a normal ID holder, the device called 'Identicom' is equipped with a dual GSM module, GSM SIM card, lithium battery and control electronics. Manufactured by UK-based Connexion2, it also supports the pinpointing of a worker's location using GSM/LBS technology.

Connexion2 is looking to expand its technology into overseas markets, including South Africa, where it says it knows Identicom will be able to support the fight against verbal and physical abuse. Connexion2 managing director, Craig Swallow, is joining a British trade mission during October to find potential partners in South Africa and to meet officials who may be interested in such technology.

Already in general use in the UK National Health Service and local councils, Identicom measures 102 x 72 x 14 mm and weighs only 78 g. The innovative technology is all contained unobtrusively within the unit. It includes a lanyard attachment that enables it to be worn around the neck as a standard ID and hides a 'rip alarm' function, which is triggered if the unit is forcibly removed from the wearer. A covert emergency button activates the alarm which opens up a voice call to a third party. A second concealed button enables the wearer to signal when they know they are entering a potentially hazardous situation.
