South Africa's new product designers awarded

A record number of new product designs received awards at this year's Prototype Award ceremony, hosted by the Design Institute, a division of the SABS. A total of 29 product designs were celebrated at a function held in November.
In 1997 the Design Institute South Africa and the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law joined forces and initiated a support programme for prototypes as part of the then SABS Design Institute Awards. The Prototype scheme, aimed at assisting and encouraging new product development in South Africa, has since grown into an independent initiative and has grown from strength to strength.
The winning products serve as testimony of the ability of this country's people to identify and address challenges in imaginative and practical ways, as well as their skill to seek diverse opportunities to develop themselves, their communities and ultimately the country.
The 2004 Prototype Award recipient is the Lemon and Lemon-aide, a telephone and Internet management device for use in the home or a small business. It is connected between the telephone or modem and the telephone line and is programmed via the telephone handset. It can support 20 users, logs up to 250 dialled numbers, is tamper-proof and supports call barring of up to 100 barred and 100 open numbers. The Lemon also doubles as an alarm clock. The Lemon-aide secures various telephone extensions of the telephone line linked to the Lemon. It was designed by Wayne Honeywill, Jan Jacobs, Lance Johnston and Xavier Desemberg.
