As the selected training partner for the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Youth ICT Internship Programme, Siemens Training Institute is able to bring its long history of technical training to bear in developing professionals for the ICT sector.
The inaugural graduation ceremony for the pilot group of 40 students was held at Siemens Park in Midrand recently. The students have completed four months of practical training in telecommunications, IT and electronics, earning the National Certificate in Telecommunications Technology from ISETT SETA.
Aimed at training young people from under-serviced areas, the Internship Programme is committed to enhancing capacity for local government. The students were recruited from various technical colleges, and will now tackle six months of workplace experience.
Lucky Masilela, director of Siemens Training Institute, says the purpose of the programme is to promote information and communication technology skills and human resources development in line with the needs of municipalities. "After an intensive six-month training programme, students acquire relevant workplace experience within their relevant municipalities in all the provinces, which in turn creates employment opportunities for them," he says.
In addition to SALGA and Siemens, other stakeholders contributing to the project include the Department of Provincial and Local Government (DPLG), the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA), the South African Communications Forum (SACF) and the State Information Technologies Agency (SITA).
The courses presented by Siemens include mechanical skills, soldering and wiring, electronics, electrical, PCs, soft skills, analytical fault finding, basic project management skills, quality/environmental studies, safety and first aid, fibre-optics and telecommunications.
