Opportunities for partnering with Australian companies

23 February 2005 News

The South African Technology Centre (SATC) at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, has identified a number of trade and market access opportunities between Australian and South African companies.

The SATC, a project under the South African Electrotechnical Export Council (SAEEC), is a public-private partnership between the dti, the SAAEC and the companies exhibiting at the Centre. Opened in March 2004, the Centre is located at the STRIP Centre (Science Technolology Research and innovation Precinct) of Monash University.

Its objectives are to:

* Set up permanent facilities in Australia to showcase South African technology and companies.

* Identify partners and joint opportunities within these regions for the benefit of all parties.

* Assist in building suitable networks to facilitate trade and investment.

* Foster and promote joint technology research and development.

* Provide market research and logistical support to companies.

* Provide access to government trade and investment incentives.

The identified opportunities are:

* Australian Synchrotron: The Australian Synchrotron is seeking potential use for this research facility due for completion and operation in 2007 (see www.synchrotron.vic.gov.au).

* The Australian Photonics Network seeks South African companies interested in collaborating in: 'Fibre to Home' aimed at increasing reliable ICT connections to homes; and 'Asset Protection Systems' sensor-based security systems for detecting intrusion (see www.mmv.vic.gov.au/photonics).

* National ICT Australia (NICTA) seeks South African companies interested in collaboration in research related to: 'Trusted Wireless Networks'; and 'From Data to Knowledge' (see www.nicta.com.au).

* Vbragg is interested in collaborating with South African companies for the manufacture of optical circulators as well as people who can write grating structures and mirrors/filters into waveguides (see www.vbragg.com.au).

For more information about these opportunities contact Kwame Asamadu, [email protected], or contact the SAEEC on [email protected].
