Despite 'competition' SA mobile call costs are still excessive

The Communications Users Association of South Africa (CUASA) has lodged a formal complaint with ICASA regarding all aspects of mobile cell call charges in South Africa.
CUASA spokesman, Ray Webber says: "We feel that various aspects surrounding cellular call charges warrant closer inspection by ICASA. CUASA's view is that the cost of calls to and from mobile phones is, in general, far too high. In addition, it is not clear why the introduction of Cell C a few years ago has not appeared to have reduced call costs - indicating a lack of real competition."
"How can it be less expensive to call a landline in a number of overseas countries from a Telkom line, than it is to call an SA cellphone from the same telephone?"
In addition, Webber says that CUASA is urging ICASA to investigate interconnect tariffs between various operators in South Africa, as well as to investigate excessive international roaming charges for using South African mobile phones overseas.
