Process control market grows semiconductor revenue

The industrial market continues to grow as an important contributor to worldwide semiconductor revenue. Awareness continues to advance in the supplier base; and there has been a flurry of recent announcements from some of the world's top suppliers introducing optimised processes and new products targeting the industrial market specifically.

This is revealed in Databeans' most recent report, '2005 Semiconductors in Process Control', in which it estimates that chips used in process controls, building controls, and inventory tracking systems reached a value of $6,4 bn, or roughly 32% of the industrial chip market. Other segments include test and measurement (23%), military and aerospace (11%), medical (10%), and other equipment used in data acquisition (24%).

Semiconductors designed for the controls market currently include mostly discretes, analog components, microcontrollers, and logic. The total market for industrial semiconductors was valued at $20 bn for 2004.
