Analog power IC market to boom

16 November 2005 News

Analog power is now one of the fastest growing markets in the semiconductor industry, due to the greater demand for power management in portable electronics. According to Databeans' 2005 issue of Analog Power ICs study, this market is expected to reach $5,8 bn for 2005, representing a 5% increase over last year. It expects much higher growth next year, as 2006 will see a new generation of consumer electronics that will substantially raise demand.

Based upon revenue, the largest analog power product segment is switching regulators, followed closely by linear regulators. However, in terms of units shipped, linear regulators typically outnumber switching regulators by more than two to one. Switching regulators will continue to generate higher revenue, and market share will continue to increase, relative to linear regulators, according to the market researchers.

A new product addition to this space is digital power ICs. Databeans estimates that digital power product revenue is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 25% each year. Digital power products essentially incorporate analog power functions around a digital core that can be programmed. This provides system designers of complex electronics with a single chip solution instead of trying to use discrete circuits to manage and monitor subsystem requirements.

So far, these products have seen demand growing in the telecom and server markets where processing trends continue to evolve with more complex requirements, such as greater currents at lower voltages. Suppliers such as Texas Instruments, Primarion, Zilker Labs, and Volterra, are moving quickly to bring power system design engineers up to speed on programming these products.
