UEC partner Irdeto acquires Philips' content protection activities

8 March 2006 News

UEC Technologies has announced that it is very excited about Irdeto's acquisition of Philips' CryptoTec unit. Long-standing as an Irdeto partner, Altech UEC incorporates Irdeto's conditional access (CA) technology into its products. A very important customer of Altech UEC is MultiChoice, who uses Irdeto CA to secure its broadcast operations.

Since MultiChoice's initial requirements in the mid-90s for digital decoders using Irdeto CA technology, Altech UEC has been able to leverage that production and the products with Irdeto CA for export outside SA, exporting some R3 billion worth of products to Irdeto customers outside South Africa such as Australia and the Middle East, making this South Africa's largest electronic export to date.

Irdeto is a world leader in content security and a subsidiary of multinational media group Naspers.

"Irdeto's acquisition of CryptoTec increases Irdeto's market reach and customer base, and Altech UEC sees this as positive news for its business as it increases the potential for Altech UEC to supply STBs to Irdeto's customers worldwide," notes Altech UEC CEO, Rob Sobey.
