ST leads in application-specific analog
3 May 2006
News
Databeans’ new study on the Analog ASSP (application specific standard product) market share reveals that STMicroelectronics continues to maintain a significant market lead (19%).
Nearly 90% of this company's analog revenue is generated by products used specifically in handsets, vehicles, consumer electronics, and embedded storage. Handset revenue alone constitutes 32% of overall analog ASSP revenue.
Year 2006 should provide revenue growth opportunities for ST, along with other handset baseband, processor, and power management chip providers, as 3G production continues to escalate, driven by both consumer demand and by increasing service provider offerings. Databeans estimates that this growing segment of the wireless chip industry will generate $7,3 bn in revenue for this year.
Infineon Technologies is the second largest analog ASSP player worldwide (14%). Infineon's wireless handset revenue constitutes 34% of its overall analog revenue. The separation of Infineon's DRAM business will consolidate business segments, says Databeans, and analog will become the largest contributing business segment, contributing over half of company revenue. In 2005, memory products accounted for over 40% of sales.
Rounding out the top five analog ASSP suppliers are Texas Instruments (12%), Philips Semiconductors (12%), and Freescale Semiconductor (6%). In terms of handset components, Freescale has the largest contribution to total analog revenue with 49%, followed by Philips with 44%, and Texas Instruments with 19%. And Texas Instruments' wireless handset analog revenue, combined with its massive handset DSP sales, constituted 41% of that company's total semiconductor revenue for 2005.
