Calls for an SA minister of ICT

The South African government faces a variety of issues in delivering on its mandate to provide services to citizens efficiently. Many of these issues could be overcome through the more effective use of ICT, but this in itself poses further challenges. This has led to a call for the appointment of an ICT minister to oversee all ICT related issues faced by the South African government.
Speaking at a workshop in Limpopo with ForgeAhead and Dimension Data, Baldwin Ramasobane, general manager at the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) for the Limpopo Province, said there is a pressing need for an ICT minister in South Africa to address issues around budget allocation to the different government departments and institutions. He stated that the limited ICT budget remains an inhibitor in implementing and carrying out successful ICT projects in the province, which prevents government from delivering services to its full capacity.
Ramasobane said that having an ICT minister would simplify the protocol involved in approving ICT projects, as currently, no one really knows which government institution or department is responsible for handling ICT issues directly.
