ICT conference to showcase 'SmartCity' concept

4 April 2007 News

The eThekwini Municipality’s inaugural SmartCity ICT Conference and Expo will break new ground in the use of technology as it streams live video footage of the proceedings to venues around the City using the Municipality’s fibre-optic network.

In its first year, the SmartCity ICT Conference is to be held on 19-20 April at Durban's Albert Luthuli International Conference Centre.

The SmartCity ICT Conference and Expo will present selected international speakers to talk about their ICT initiatives, while local speakers will be invited to discuss strategies that customise available technologies to the needs of South Africa.

Part of the SmartCity initiative is to provide affordable broadband technology to the citizens of Durban.

"One such method will be using the City's own fibre-optic infrastructure, and as such this will be a tangible showing of what is achievable using the communications solution," said the eThekwini Municipality's head of Geographic and Information Systems, Jacquie Subban.

"This conference is the culmination of a concerted campaign to inform business and citizens of broadband technology and how it can change business processes, government services, and education delivery, as well as how this technology may be used to improve the lives of the average citizen," she said.

The video streaming of the Conference is being made possible via the technical expertise of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Audio Visual Centre and will be beamed to venues at their five campuses.

"The collaboration of the Audio Visual Centre in the ICT Conference and Expo is directly in line with the objectives of an existing Memorandum of Understanding between the City and the University. We are happy to partner in this initiative in order to share the knowledge showcased at the Conference and Expo with a wider audience," said Jasper Cecil, UKZN's AV director.
