Mohapi has Bachelors and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Boston's Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a PhD in Electrical Engineering (Telecommunications) from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Previously, Mohapi worked in software development at the Sapient Corporation in Boston. Upon returning to South Africa, he was employed at Wits University, Transtel and Internet Solutions. Mohapi was one of the first full-time employees at Neotel, the second fixed-line operator, where he successfully led interconnection negotiations with the country's three mobile operators, as well as developing and launching Neotel's wholesale international voice and IP transit services, the company's first set of services. Most recently, Mohapi was an executive director at ICT-Works in charge of telecommunications.

Mohapi says: "I am quite excited to be a part of a team that will pave the way into this new world of convergent electronic communications. Telkom Media will be the first media entity to offer true convergence opportunities in South Africa, bringing together the worlds of communications and broadcasting in an exciting new way and providing satellite TV, IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) and online multimedia services over a common service delivery platform.
