Telecoms kitting for Africa

5 September 2007 News

Webb Industries’ kitting division has grown by more than 27% per annum every year for the last three years, an enviable feat in anyone’s book.

This is in part due to growth in the sector but is also due to Webb's expertise in Africa and the exceptional organisation of the division.

"Anyone in the industry will tell you that when it comes to cables and accessories and the kitting out of telecommunication sites, cellular or fixed line, the most important thing is to be able to get what you want from one supplier. This is especially true for cross-border customers," says Mark Colling, Webb Industries kitting division manager. He adds that Webb is probably the most extensive one-stop-shop for telecommunication sites in the country. "We are unique in that we supply such a wide range of products in the telecommunications environment."

Even a cursory glance at Webb's warehouse reveals a remarkable array of products, both electrical and RF. From the tiniest screw, door magnets and alarm systems to coaxial cables and the most sophisticated connectors, Colling has meticulously organised everything he needs to provide his customers with the right solution. "I think that 'solution' is the key word. We advise our customers how to most efficiently build a telecoms site and then we prepare everything that they need in one workable package," says Colling.

He adds that most of his sales are 'made to order' for sites but of course a good deal of their revenue is in the shape of once-off items as spares. Colling emphasises that the provision of solution and product is only part of the story. "Ultimately our success stems from the fact that we have excellent technical ability, good communications within the Webb organisation and that we have always managed to give an excellent service before and after the sale. We drive the service ethic very hard." Ericsson's Dirk van der Berg concurs. "Webb's kitting division is very well organised. It always seems to have the product one needs at any given time, their technical knowledge is great and their backup support has been exemplary."

From an African perspective, Webb has been doing successful business across the continent for several years. "So many of our customers are outside our borders and over the years they have developed a trust in this company to deliver on time at competitive prices," says Colling, who spends much of his time on site in other African countries helping to develop the right solutions for any number of the myriad telecommunication sites in a burgeoning industry across the continent.

One of Webb's outstanding achievements has been its development of a microwave installation kit, which ranges from the antenna down to the smallest connector. "We have supplied more than 2000 microwave antennas in the last 19 months," says Colling.

Established in 1973, Webb Industries has become one of the leading innovators in ancillary products for telecommunications infrastructure. Part of the JSE listed Jasco group, it continues to evolve alongside the rapidly changing telecommunications sector and, apart from its antennas, offers a comprehensive range of coaxial cables and connectors, duplexers and filters, earthing, lightning protection, as well as the supply and installation of masts and towers.
