Cinterion solidifies M2M market position

14 April 2010 News

Cinterion Wireless Modules is looking forward to a strong 2010, having enjoyed a successful 2009 that saw the company launch several new products, receive numerous industry awards and cement new strategic partnerships. Significantly, given the prevailing market conditions, Cinterion finished the year with a very strong cash position, an over-fulfilment of operating profit and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) and an excellent 99 out of 100 point Dun & Bradstreet rating.

According to Sam Lucero, research director at ABI Research: “Cinterion has led the M2M module market in overall shipment volume for a number of years. Cinterion’s market performance has been particularly impressive given the turbulent economic conditions that have challenged the M2M module industry over the past 12 to 18 months. Going forward, ABI Research anticipates the global market for M2M modules will rise from roughly 30 million units shipped in 2009 to approximately 88 million units shipped in 2014, comprising applications such as telematics, smart metering and tele-health, among others. Cinterion is very well-positioned to continue competing successfully in this growing market.”

Cinterion created strategic partnerships with industry leading wireless operators including Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and others. To stimulate sales, it strengthened its worldwide distribution channel, establishing partnerships with global leaders such as Elko/Arrow, Avnet and others. The company expanded its testing and integration services network via partnerships with Research and Engineering Centre, GTT, 7layers and CETECOM to name a few.

In addition, Cinterion modules were selected for numerous end-user solutions in regions around the world and in all vertical markets including the key growth areas of healthcare, smart metering and automotive. The Company also launched the first LGA modules to the M2M market including EES3, EGS5, EGS3 and BGS3 and launched EU3 to support UMTS and GPRS/EDGE technology for seamless transition to 3G networks.

Some of Cinterion’s industry awards included:

* GSMA Best Embedded Mobile Module competition for the 2G Evolution platform including MC75i, TC65i, TC63i, EES3, EGS5 and EGS3.

* GSMA Best Embedded End-to-End Service Award and CTIA 2010 E-Tech Award Finalist for the Cinterion-enabled Philips Respironics System One sleep apnea therapy solution.

* Two M2M Value Chain Awards for Cinterion-enabled automotive solutions for Hertz and BLS Trucking.

* 2010 Top 100 industry leaders recognised by M2M Magazine.

“M2M technology is gaining more and more importance in a variety of vertical markets that are recognising the cost and process efficiencies only M2M can provide,” said Norbert Muhrer, Cinterion’s CEO. “With our transition to an independent, flexible company in mid-2008, we were able to mitigate a sluggish M2M market in early ’09 and end the year with a very strong cash position and profits. We remain committed to further strengthening our leadership position and expanding the M2M industry as a whole in the coming year.”

Over the last year, Cinterion maintained its number one market position, reportedly outranking the second and third place competitors combined. In the coming year, Cinterion aims to strengthen its Evolution platform with new scalable 2G and 3G products to meet growing M2M market demand.
