News
Eskom’s Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition 2012 is currently running, and invites participation from students through to established professionals. The stated goal of the competition is to demonstrate that efficient lighting technologies, such as discharge, fluorescent and LED technologies, can be used in contemporary and attractive luminaires and lighting design systems intended for residential lighting.
Numerous prizes are on offer, sorted into several categories.
In category A: Residential Luminaire Design (Students), full-time students at all tertiary institutions (universities, colleges, design centres and schools of design) in South Africa are invited to submit a luminaire design using an energy efficient light source, suitable for use in the home. Total prize money in this category is R100 000, with R30 000 going to the winner.
Category B is aimed at professional graphic designers, electrical engineers, product designers, researchers and anyone with a passion for design, who are invited to submit innovative energy efficient designs, systems or products suitable for residential application. The winner here will take away R40 000, with another R5000 on offer for each of six regional finalists.
Two special awards are being offered: one for the most promising young student and another for the most promising young amateur designer. The winner of each of these awards will receive R10 000.
Competition entries close on 31 August 2012. Those wishing to learn more can visit www.lighting-design.co.za or check out the competition stand at The Green Expo on 27–29 July or Decorex from 8-12 August, both of which take place in the Johannesburg area.
