No local manufacturing for VDSL rollout

While many companies are enthusiastic about the rollout of Telkom’s 20 Mbps and 40 Mbps VDSL (very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line) business offerings, the local electronics industry has been left on the shelf.
Following a conversation with a Telkom spokesperson, Dataweek established that all equipment for the service will be sourced from international suppliers Huawei and Alcatel. “We went out to tender on the project some time ago for equipment based on multi-service access node (MSAN) and unfortunately, we were unable to find any local manufacturers who were able to provide the requisite components or equipment as required by the project,” he said.
He did, however, add that all commissioning will take place locally, providing job opportunities in that sector. The spokesperson was not at liberty to divulge any information regarding the budget allocated to the rollout or the proposed rollout areas.
