New DStv decoder being assembled in East London

21 August 2013 News

MultiChoice has launched a new high-definition DStv PVR decoder with enhanced functionality and technical specifications over its current model.

Although the contract to make the decoder – dubbed the Explora – went to UK-based manufacturer Pace, local (East London-based) contract manufacturer Vektronix has been tapped to assemble and deliver the units.

Aspects of the new box which have been improved over the prior model include a bigger and faster hard drive to extend video-on-demand capability, a faster processor from Broadcom, a redesigned user interface and remote control, and Ethernet connectivity, with 3G and Wi-Fi dongles promised to come in the future.

Pace is already a technology partner with MultiChoice for the existing HD PVR. The partnership between the two companies first started in 1995 with the development of MultiChoice’s very first PVR decoder. Mass production of the Explora started in July at Vektronix, and it is expected to be available at retail from 15 August.

Mark Merigot, senior vice president of operations at Pace, said “Setting up remote facilities can be challenging and we’d like to thank our long standing customer MultiChoice and local manufacturing partner Vektronix for their support. This is a significant investment for Pace and underlines our commitment for business and growth in the region.”

Having a manufacturing facility in South Africa enables Pace to locally supply set-top boxes to operators in South Africa and into SADC (Southern African Development Community) countries.

Craig Tyzack, MD at Vektronix, stated that the company was equally proud to have been selected to manufacture Pace’s leading-edge products, and that this project was testament to the fact that South African manufacturers have the ability to produce to world-class standards.
