Esselenpark introduces 'Best' programme for students

14 February 2001 News

ISETT SETA (Information Systems, Electronics and Telecommunication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority) has appointed Esselenpark to run the Skills programme to be known as the Basic Electronic Skills Training (BEST). It says this comes as a direct result of the government's Skills Development Act aiming primarily to empower previously disadvantaged individuals with skills, and ultimately employment.

According to Esselenpark CEO Boni Dibate, "Esselenpark is committed to the National Agenda of the Skills Development Act. We have always played a vital role in the advancement of skills of many South Africans. We promote the development of knowledge, leadership and management ability. We were awarded this programme to manage as a result of our trainers, infrastructure and track record in training at this level."

"The best programme is a basic electronic skills training programme that empowers previously disadvantaged matriculants eager to learn new skills within the IT industry and who were otherwise unable to continue with their studies. The training programme also endeavors to place graduates in member companies where they too can fulfill their dream of a better future," she added.

Selection criteria

Matriculants between the ages of 18 and 24 must have mathematics as one of their subjects passed. Esselenpark has implemented the City and Guilds of London Institute Information Technology Scheme and qualification. It says these qualifications are industry-led, current and are also in line with technological advancements. The courses run for a period of nine months and are separated into theoretical and practical training.

"Development boils down to training and education and we must do this in the quickest and in the most cost-effective manner. We must also make it possible for smaller companies to contribute to the sector's development needs. Also, by contributing to the Skills Development Levy Fund and supporting the ISETT SETA in motivating the skills development programme, all companies can make a contribution to the ISETT SETA sector's development plan," commented Charlton Philiso, Training Manager for Esselenpark.
