Shurlok lands contract to supply Proton Malaysia

14 February 2001 News

Pietermaritzburg-based company Shurlok recently announced another large export contract. According to Rod Forrester, Managing Director, this latest contract is to supply Proton, a Malaysian-based automotive manufacturing company, with a vehicle security system. Proton currently exports vehicles to 50 countries including the highly competitive UK and continental Europe. It manufactures 180 000 units per annum at present, and is expanding its facilities to bring its total capacity to 230 000 units.

Shurlok, a division of Electromatic, has been designing, developing and manufacturing electronic systems and products for the automotive and industrial markets for the past 30 years. According to Forrester, achieving and maintaining quality standards such as QS9000, ISO 9001 and VDA6, has enabled Shurlok to become a major supplier of electronic vehicle security systems, engine management systems (ECUs) and comfort electronics to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as BMW, Daimler Chrysler, Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen and Ford.

Shurlok has been tasked to supply a technologically advanced security system that will be integrated into the vehicle harness for added security. The module combines advanced alarm features with the comfort of keyless entry provided by a code hopping remote control. This remote is custom built into the vehicle's ignition key and works in conjunction with the transponder immobiliser. A battery-backed siren completes the alarm security system.

The alarm system will be fitted to the Proton GX model that will be launched early this year. Shurlok will supply a total of 20 000 systems for the first year with sales expecting to grow once the vehicle is exported to other countries. The total value of this first contract is R17m over the next three years.

Forrester concluded that this contract reinforces Shurlok's vision and export strategy to supply and build world-class products for the local and international markets. Production facilities at the Pietermaritzburg-based plant have been upgraded to meet the increased production volumes required.
