From the editor's desk: Couldn’t put it together again

2 September 2015 News

Once upon a time, a king ruled over a mythical land not so very different from our own, safely ensconced within his sprawling rural retreat. Surrounded by his extended (not to mention extensive) brood and with a court of royal advisors to watch over his subjects, he reigned safe in the knowledge that his person and possessions were protected from fire by a magical swimming pool, and that his trusty helipad would serve as an escape route from any terrestrial threat.

Eager to spur foreign investment and ensure gainful employment for his subjects, the king bade his advisors offer tax cuts as an enticement for rich and powerful mega-corporations to settle in his kingdom. And so it came to pass that the land enjoyed a time of great prosperity.

But when the rulers of nearby lands saw with jealous eyes what the king had wrought, they schemed to undermine him by offering even sweeter deals.

Gradually, the mega-corporations moved to greener pastures and supply of the goods they manufactured dwindled across the kingdom.

Desperate to re-establish a reliable supply stream, the king’s advisors sought audience with the old manufacturers that had enjoyed success before the mega-corporations arrived. They journeyed the length and breadth of the kingdom to the old factories, only to find those once proud stalwarts of industry silent and deserted.

The End.
