EXFO delivers in excess of 10 000 modular test platforms

7 May 2003 Test & Measurement

EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering says it has shipped well in excess of 10 000 modular test platforms to establish itself as the vendor of choice for customers seeking high-performance, cost-effective solutions.

EXFO, which pioneered the development of modular architectures for optical testing in 1996, has released several FTB and IQS/IQ test platforms over the years to meet the various market requirements of the optical networking life cycle including R&D, manufacturing, installation and maintenance and network monitoring.

The main advantage of EXFO's system design for customers is that, unlike standalone units, new test modules can be rapidly developed to meet changing industry needs. As customer requirements evolve, they can purchase additional test modules that are compatible with their original platforms and, as a result, protect their initial investments. Conversely, customers can seamlessly migrate to next-generation platforms that support both the latest and previously launched test modules.

"This latest milestone demonstrates how widely entrenched our field-testing and manufacturing platforms have become in the fibre-optic test and measurement industry," said Germain Lamonde, chairman, president and CEO of EXFO. "We have created a paradigm shift in optical testing that is so appreciated by our customers that many of our competitors have been forced to follow suit."

Not content to rest on its first-mover advantage, EXFO became the first fibre-optic test and measurement manufacturer to fully integrate protocol-, optical- and physical-layer testing capabilities inside a single modular platform. This is a unique all-in-one solution that allows field technicians to select test modules from an extensive portfolio of technologies, including 10 Gbps SONET/SDH analysers, Gigabit Ethernet testers, optical spectrum analysers (OSAs), chromatic dispersion (CD) analysers, polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) analysers, optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs), optical loss test sets and optical switches, to solve their increasingly complex network testing issues.

EXFO's current test platform offering consists of the FTB-400 Universal Test System and FTB-100B Mini-OTDR for network service providers as well as the IQS-500 Intelligent Test System for system vendors and optical component manufacturers. In addition, the company recently added multi-channel telecom and datacom testing platforms for system vendors following the recent acquisition of the assets of gnubi communications. All of these best-in-class platforms, which boast an intuitive graphical user interface, are supported by approximately 25 families of test modules.

"The breadth of our product portfolio and our sound financial position have increasingly made EXFO the compelling choice for customers requiring a fully integrated test solution," concluded Lamonde.
