Exar has released what it says is the industry's first 14-channel physical-layer LIUs which uses the company's innovative R3 (reconfigurable, relayless redundancy) technology. These devices (XRT83L314 and XRT83SL314) are targeted at multiservice provisioning platforms (MSPPs), access devices, media gateways, routers, and frame relay access devices.
Why 14-channels?
A typical multiplexer application involves multiplexing/demultiplexing of either 28 T1 channels, or 21 E1 channels into DS3/E3. Until now, this was implemented using either four 8-channel T1/E1 LIUs or a combination of three 8-channel LIUs and one 4-channel LIU. This caused a great deal of design complexity and also limited the ability to mux/demux a larger number of T1/E1 channels due to board space. The 14-channel devices not only offer a simple and easy way to higher density T1/E1 channels, but also employ Exar's R3 Technology.
R3 Technology delivers key innovative features to customers designing T1/E1/J1 interface cards, says the manufacturer. The devices are 'reconfigurable' with integrated terminations supporting all common T1/E1/J1 line impedances (75/100/110/120 Ω) enabling customers to build one board with a single bill-of-materials. 'Relayless redundancy' eliminates the need for external relays for 1:1 and 1+1 applications by establishing a back-up channel or card that can be brought on-line in the event of failure.
The devices meet popular telecom specifications such as ITU G.703, G.775, ANSI T1.402. and Bellcore GR-499 core. Other features include a parallel microprocessor bus supporting both synchronous and asynchronous microprocessor interfaces for Motorola, Intel and MIPS processors. The devices contain two crystalless jitter attenuators per channel that can be simultaneously configured in both the transmit and receive paths.
