Dot matrix LCD-driver for automotive applications

4 June 2003 Opto-Electronics

EPSON has introduced the S1D15715, a single chip driver for dot matrix liquid crystal displays (LCD) in automotive applications such as low-cost car radios and dashboard systems.

The S1D15715 allows a maximum duty cycle of 1/17 and incorporates a display data memory (RAM) of 102x33 bits. It is suitable for dot-matrix LCDs with a maximum of 102 x 17 pixels.

This new driver features an internal oscillator circuit for display clocks - additional external operation clocks are not required to perform display data read/write operations, thereby ensuring operation at minimum current consumption.

The S1D15715 does not need external smoothing capacitors for the LCD power supply. An internal electronic volume control register allows adjustment of the LCD driver voltages without the need for additional external parts. A command to discharge external capacitors guarantees clear optical turn-off of the display.

Operation is from 1,8 to 5,5 V and it is rated for -40 to +85°C temperature range.
