Addition to 'energy-saving' power conversion IC range

4 June 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Power Integrations has added a lower cost part to its LinkSwitch family, continuing its campaign to replace 'energy vampire' linear transformer chargers and adapters with smaller, more efficient switching designs. The new LNK500, a high-voltage monolithic power conversion IC, uses the same innovative primary switching power supply topology as the current LNK501, but takes full advantage of the loose output current characteristic of most low-end linear transformer designs, according to the company.

LNK500's wider output current tolerance of ±25% allows for lower system cost, the most critical barrier in replacing older linear transformer designs. Switcher benefits of a LinkSwitch-based power supply include smaller size, lighter weight, superior performance, and significantly higher energy efficiency.

With as few as 14 components, the LNK500, using the company's EcoSmart technology, can enable a fault-protected, universal input (85 to 265 V a.c.), constant voltage (CV) or constant voltage, constant current (CV/CC) output switching power supply that meets worldwide energy efficiency standards.

Applications for the LNK500 include linear transformer replacement in adapters and battery chargers for a wide range of personal electronics and consumer products.

The 3 W LNK500 part is offered in a plastic DIP-8 package or an 8-pin surface-mount package. A Design Accelerator Kit (DAK-16A), containing two operational 2,75 W universal input AC-DC adapters, product samples and the company's power supply design software program, PI Expert, is also available.
