Short-circuit-rated inverter modules for drives

4 June 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management Integrated Solutions

International Rectifier offers a new family of 1200 V, short-circuit-rated, motor drive modules with six IGBTs, each with a built-in free-wheeling diode. The modules expand the IR line of inverter modules used in variable speed motor drives for plastics forming machines, packaging equipment, printing presses and other industrial applications up to 15 kW.

Housed in the ECONO2 package, two configurations are available: a three-phase inverter; and a power integrated module or PIM, which combines a three-phase bridge, a brake and a three-phase inverter. Both module types include a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor.

The inverter module family is composed of three SixPack GB25XF120K, GB35XF120K and GB50XF120K fully-insulated inverter modules based on IR's non punch-through (NPT) IGBTs. The IGBTs feature a square reverse-bias safe operating area (RBSOA), and withstand 10 µs short circuits. A low and positive VCE (on) temperature coefficient improves ruggedness during start-up and prevents abnormal current and voltage spikes.

According to IR the 'square' RBSOA provides maximum current rating up to the maximum voltage rating, and enables soft shutdown for the gate driver circuits. With a HEXFRED antiparallel diode with ultrasoft recovery characteristics and low EMI built-in, snubbing circuitry requirements are reduced.

These IGBT modules work best with IR's high voltage IC gate drivers such as the IR22xx series, simplifying component procurement and circuit design, says the company.
