Wireless local area networking (WLAN) will be a challenge and offers huge possibilities for the embedded systems market in the next five years. Amongst other advantages, wireless LANs will mean flexible and fast installations, increased productivity through mobility, and easily scalable networks.
First generation WLAN installations: WLAN is a technology that offers a fast, reliable, and cost-effective solution for clients to access the network in many applications and environments. Some examples of these are: difficult-to-wire environments; historic or older buildings; open areas where wiring is difficult to employ; retailers, manufacturers or others that frequently rearrange the workplace or relocate; temporary networks/LANs; access to databases for mobile workers; and quick inter-building connections.
Wireless building-to-building networks are quickly and easily installed, require no monthly lease fees, and provide the flexibility to reconfigure easily.
Second generation WLAN applications: For second generation WLAN there will be special applications for functions such as fleet management, logistics control, security service, transportation, and waste management. This is all in the embedded systems market area, and the volumes are expected to be very large.
Combining embedded systems and WLAN
At the simplest form, WLAN is just an alternative to the traditional cable. One may recommend WLAN to the places as mentioned for first generation WLAN installations, creating a value-added service for the customer. No special software or hardware is needed, other than a WLAN card. An integrated PC/104Plus WLAN adapter is the easiest way to do it - and this is simply added to an embedded system.
The one end can simply be a single PC using WLAN, or, if there is a larger WLAN installation, a WLAN access point. At the other end, the WLAN can form a vital part of a company's enterprise resource planning (ERP) application, like SAP, changing the way a company does business and serves customers.
