Will US and Japanese companies continue to dominate the market for classic optoelectronic components?

27 August 2003 News

The classic optoelectronic components market is an established market with dominant global suppliers mostly headquartered in the USA and Japan. However, over the last few years hundreds of low cost manufacturers have emerged mainly in the greater China region (first led by Taiwan).

A new report from electronics industry market research firm, IMS Research, based in the UK, on the world markets for optoelectronic components, contains detailed analysis of the regional and end user markets, and also examines the competitive environment in these markets.

The company's latest findings show that over 150 companies are active in this market and that of the 108 companies examined, approximately 45% are headquartered in the Greater China region, 27% in the USA and 14% in Japan. However, in 2002, Japanese and US companies still accounted for 80% of the total revenues.

In recent years, says IMS Research, the manufacturing of appliances that use classic optoelectronic components has migrated towards the Far East and therefore it has been easier for smaller component suppliers to set up and supply their native markets. To counter this attack the large multinationals have begun, not only to move manufacturing, but also their operational headquarters for optoelectronic components to Asia.

As a result, the balance of power in this market has migrated away from countries such as Japan and the USA to countries such as Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. IMS Research forecasts that this trend will continue with the likelihood of consolidation of suppliers and an increased presence of suppliers from Greater China (particularly Taiwan) seen in the EMEA and American markets.
