Fast multilayer varistors for circuit and ESD protection

27 August 2003 Circuit & System Protection

Vishay BCcomponents has released a new range of multilayer varistors that combine typical 0,5 ns response time with capacitance values down to 70 pF (25 pF optional) in accordance to CECC42000 and IEC 61051-1.

Suitable for applications ranging from voltage pulse interference protection in the automotive field, to mobile phones, audio/video and computer systems, these parts are ideal for protecting sensitive components from incoming overvoltage transients. Featuring high energy/volume ratio and nickel/tin terminations they can withstand a three-fold, lead-free reflow soldering process.

Varistors offer advantages over traditional circuit protection devices including insensitivity to reverse polarity, reduced footprint and low component count. Other key device specifications are: maximum power dissipation is 5 mW; working voltage is from 4 V to 25 V; pulse current 30 A max; -55 to +150°C temp operating range; may also be used to suppress electrostatic discharges reaching 15 kV in air and 8 kV in contact (IEC 61000-4-2).
