'VIC-in-a-Brick' quarter-brick intermediate bus converters

Vicor introduced its V•I Chips adapted to the footprint and pin-out of a telecom-standard, through-hole quarter brick Intermediate Bus DC Transformer. Called the 'VIC-in-a-Brick', the company says that this format makes it easy to retrofit a V•I Chip into a quarter-brick application and achieve superior performance in terms of density, efficiency, fast response and quiet, low noise operation.
Power designers can still surface mount the original V•I Chip directly to their board for increased power density and reduced size and weight. However, a VIC-in-a-Brick configuration can be used as a second source replacement for DC transformer style bricks in many applications.
The Vicor Bus Converter Module delivers an isolated 12 V at up to 200 W for Intermediate Bus Architecture applications such as in telecom and computing. The BCM may be used to power non-isolated point-of-load (niPOL) converters or to convert a semi-regulated 48 V source to a 12 V bus. Up to two BCMs can be accommodated in the VIC-in-a-Brick format for a total of 400 W of power conversion in the space of a quarter-brick. Efficiency of the 12 V BCM exceeds 96% over a wide load range.
