EXFO has introduced the WA-5900 Wavemeter Fibre Bragg Grating Monitor that allows monitoring of environmental conditions such as temperature, pressure and strain in remote areas using fibre-optic sensors. In applications involving petrochemical, civil, geophysical and utilities, the data from the WA-5900 can enhance industrial productivity and provide early warning for hazardous situations.
Fibre-optic sensors offer distinct advantages for remote monitoring because they are environmentally stable, offer higher accuracy measurements and have a longer lifetime. In particular, the fibre Bragg grating (FBG) based fibre-optic sensor is preferred, especially for use in demanding applications. Significant benefits include:
* Most accurate FBG interrogation for maximum confidence in sensor data.
* Complete illumination/measurement system for convenient deployment.
* Widest wavelength coverage for maximum versatility.
* Robust design for real-world environments.
The WA-5900 uses EXFO's proven scanning Michelson interferometer-based technology to measure the absolute wavelength of the optical signal reflected from FBG-based sensors. In addition, all factors that can affect the absolute wavelength measurement are accounted for in order to achieve the highest absolute wavelength accuracy.
"With fibre-optic sensors, the information of interest is encoded with the absolute wavelength of the optical signal reflected from the FBG. As a result, it is critical that the absolute wavelength of the reflected optical signal is measured precisely, a particular strength for EXFO," says Germain Lamonde, CEO of EXFO.
"The new WA-5900 continues our tradition of offering the highest standard in wavelength measurement accuracy - a key requirement in fibre-optic sensing applications. The WA-5900 measures the absolute wavelength to a guaranteed accuracy of ±1,5 pm."
