Western Cape ICT census results released

The Western Cape's ICT industry consists of approximately 1200 companies and employs 27 000 people, making it the second largest employer, next to tourism, in the province. This is according to results this month, of a census of Western Cape ICT companies.

The Cape Information Technology Initiative's (CITI) initiated the census in response to the need for in-depth and reliable information about the Western Cape's ICT sector from local and international groups. The census pointed to strong growth in the SMME sector, leading to greater entrepreneurial activity and innovation. The majority of companies are involved in software development and ICT consulting services.

32% of the 566 respondent companies interviewed export products and services to Africa, Europe and North America. These range across the board but are dominated by software development (25%) and mobile telecommunications (8%), as well as Web development, outsourced services and consulting and Internet related services.
