The inexpensive alternative to linear potentiometers

24 September 2003 Passive Components Security Services & Risk Management

Balluff offers a versatile line of position transducers especially designed for use in challenging environmental conditions.

Called Micropulse, these transducers operate on the principle of magneto-striction. This technique detects the measured position without contact, so there are no wearing parts. Measuring ranges between 25 and 5000 mm. The measuring element is a waveguide made of a nickel-iron alloy.

According to Balluff, these transducers are more shock- and vibration-resistant than the usual technology. Linearity, repeatability and hysteresis have been vastly improved, and the new generation features a resolution of 1 µm - without recirculation or averaging. All transducers can be easily integrated into existing control systems, since Balluff supplies versions with optional analog output, discrete pulse, SSD, CANopen or PROFIBUS-DP interface. A separate signal processor is also available if needed.

The Micropulse transducers all feature IP67 ratings and are available in various form factors. The rod-style version was developed for extreme environmental conditions. With stroke lengths between 50 and 4000 mm, the rod-style is ideal for use in hydraulic cylinders or for level sensing in aggressive media. The BTL5 profile series represents a rugged and cost-effective alternative to linear potentiometers. These can handle stroke lengths of between 50 and 4000 mm, and configurations include a version with floating magnet for use with moving machine members outside of hydraulic cylinders, or in the profile housing with a captured magnet attached to the moving member through a control arm.

The BTL6 series - especially designed for use on injection molding machines - are rugged, non-contact and wear-free, and can handle stroke lengths of between 100 and 1500 mm. They have a resolution of 10 µm and repeatability of 20 µm.
