1,5 A step-down switching regulator has only 100 µA quiescent current

8 October 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Linear Technology's LT1976EFE is a high voltage step-down switching regulator with Burst Mode operation that keeps quiescent current under 100 µA.

The LT1976 operates within a V(IN) range of 3,3 to 60 V, making it ideal for load dump or cold-crank conditions in automotive applications. Its 1,5 A internal switch can deliver up to 1,25 A of continuous output current to voltages as low as 1,25 V.

The LT1976 is Linear Technology's first high voltage switching regulator to offer Burst Mode operation. Its ultra-low quiescent current is well suited to applications such as automotive systems, which demand always-on systems and optimum battery life. The combination of its thermally enhanced TSSOP package and 200 kHz switching frequency keeps external inductors and capacitors small, providing a very compact footprint.

The LT1976 uses a high efficiency 60 V, 1,5 A, 0,2 Ω switch with the necessary oscillator, control and logic circuitry integrated into a single die. Special design techniques and a new high voltage process enable high efficiency over a wide input voltage range, while its current mode topology enables fast transient response and superior loop stability. Efficiency is optimised over a wide output current range by employing Burst Mode operation at low currents, using the output to bias the internal circuitry and a supply boost capacitor to fully saturate the power switch. Additional features include a power good flag with programmable threshold and time-out, as well as soft-start capability and thermal shutdown.
