Interactive electronic technical manual said to be a world first

Logtronics, a joint venture company of Grintek from South Africa and Saab from Sweden, has developed what it claims is the only true 'Class V' interactive electronic technical manual (IETM) in use in the world today. Integrated with a locally-developed generic test station, it provides an ideal platform for supporting high technology electronics equipment.
The development process included the integration and use of a logistic support analysis record database, failure modes effects and criticality analysis tools as well as model-based diagnostic reasoning development tools, said Logtronics. The IETM facilitates different user levels and can be set up to meet the specific requirements of a great variety of users.
"As avionics equipment become more integrated and complex, this development provides a solution for users to cost-effectively support the equipment with technicians that could be of a lower skills level. It does, however, also provide the capability for expert technicians to selectively make use of diagnostics functions where required," said André Landsberg, chief operating officer of Logtronics.
The Logtronics support concept of making use of generic support facilities to maintain a variety of high technology electronics equipment, has prompted the need for such a development.
"This support concept provides users the benefits of economy of scale and could be successfully applied to the latest defence procurement programmes of the South African National Defence force," said Landsberg.
The team responsible for the development of the IETM has been invited to present a paper in the US at the Auto Test Conference during September 2003.
"Participating at the conference not only increases our profile as one of the leaders in the field, but also provides an opportunity to stimulate further development of related technology," concluded Landsberg.
