Wireless module includes GPRS and Java

22 October 2003 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The new TC45 is the first module of its kind that combines the successful Siemens Wireless Module platform with a standardised open software platform of Java.

The TC45 with GPRS and Java means a new generation of modules has entered the market. This means that applications now have far more possibilities, while development times are reduced.

The Dual-Band GSM/GPRS module TC45 features an ultra-low profile and low-power consumption for data, voice, SMS and fax. It is thus ideally designed for telematic and telemetry applications. It allows users to run their specific application software on the module sharing the internal resources of the module for controller, memory and general-purpose I/O ports. As with all Siemens modules, it is fully type approved (FTA) according to R&TTE and GCF. The combination of all these advantages is what makes the TC45 unique.

Open software platform: Java

Based on the powerful J2ME, which is a hardware independent Java standard for mobile equipment, the TC45 enables easy integration of your application software. With the PC-emulator and a debug environment, developers can create their specific application software and test it in a kind of sandbox model before downloading the software into the module. This flexible procedure offers high reliability and significantly shortens time to market, as test and valuation cycles are reduced. The use of the integrated TCP/IP protocol stack of the cellular engine enables troublefree Internet access. This gives the opportunity to update application software either over the air (OTA) or via serial interface.

Sharing internal components such as the controller and memory of the module cuts development costs significantly since extra components are not needed and hardware footprints can be shrunk. Up to nine freely-programmable general purpose I/O pins (GPIOs) open the opportunity to process external data or to execute commands on the device side. The net result is far simpler integration into the application by saving component costs as well as efforts for hardware development.

The TC45 comes packaged with Java technology included, a PC based emulator with debug environment, and in addition, a helpful library of software routines for GSM/GPRS communication as well as simple samples of typical software applications that help accelerate the design process.
