Tabletop AOI system for post assembly inspection

25 February 2004 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

A tabletop inspection system to inspect solder and components in post assembly inspection, Omron's VT-Mouse is able to detect component presence/absence, polarity, tombstones and solder defects like Omron's larger AOI machines, but, says the company, at a price and size more suitable for low volume applications.

Well suited for all levels of production, the machine uses Windows NT-based software that is both easy to program and intuitive to use. The Colour Highlight System uses a series of light sources that projects onto the PCB from different angles. This image is captured as the colours reflect off the board's surface to produce 3-dimensional information from a 2-dimensional image. This level of inspection can detect minute solder joint flaws as well as missing or misplaced components, polarity and all usual component defects including lifted leads.

A unique 'Colour Extraction System' enables operators to adjust tolerances and settings ranges in the inspection criteria with a click of the mouse. One click selects the desired pixels and all similarly coloured pixels. This simplifies and speeds up set-up and programming and allows the user to adjust tolerances whilst viewing the image on screen.

The VT-MUS measures 800 (W) x 850 (D) x 400 (H) mm in size and can accept PCBs with board sizes from 60 x 60 mm to 350 x 350 mm.
