Low capacitance suppressors for high speed data lines

25 February 2004 Circuit & System Protection Asset Management Commercial (Industry)

The 0603ESDA electrostatic discharge (ESD) suppressor from Cooper Bussmann, using its SurgX polymer technology, helps protect sensitive electronic devices, data lines and personal computers from extensive circuit damage. The company says that with low capacitance of 0,15 pF the 0603 SurgX can be used on high speed data lines, such as USB2.0, IEEE1394b and Giga-Ethernet, without signal distortion at frequencies above 6 GHz, and combined with a leakage current of 0,1 nA this makes it virtually invisible to the circuit until activated by an ESD pulse.

SurgX surface mount chips are available in small, single and multiline array formats, as small as 1,53 mm by 0,76 mm, with lead-free plating. These components are bi-directional, have very fast response time and exceed the requirements outlined in IEC61000-4-2. Providing protection against 15 kV ESD threats, SurgX is rated to handle peak currents of up to 45 A and operate over a temperature range of -40 to +85°C.
