Free downloadable design tools

10 March 2004 Design Automation News

Taiyo Yuden is offering major new design tools free of charge on its website ( www.t-yuden.com) to designers of WLAN, car navigation systems, base stations, cellular handsets and other electronic equipment. Free device models of its advanced surface-mount components in the RF Component Library for use with Ansoft Designer v1.1, a leading electronic design automation (EDA) simulation tool are available. In addition, S-Parameter data files used in the simulation of high-frequency circuits are also available for download at no charge. Both new tools offer greater accuracy in product characterisation and significant potential time savings to engineers by helping to reduce prototype cycles and design time, says the company.

Taiyo Yuden developed the RF Component Library in partnership with Ansoft for use with Ansoft Designer v1.1, a fully integrated circuit, system and electromagnetic field simulator capable of highly precise, integrated analysis of analog, digital, high frequency wave, microwave and light communications performance parameters. Key Taiyo Yuden surface-mount components offered in the simulation library include capacitors, ferrite beads and multilayer inductors. Models include the company's high-frequency, high-Q inductors and its ultra small 0402 and 0201 components.

Low-cost PC-based simulation tools have proven indispensable in shortening development times of high-frequency circuits found in cellular phones, wireless LANs and other devices. Analogous to frequency response functions, complex scattering parameters, or S-Parameters, are used to characterise high-frequency networks, in place of lower-frequency characterisation models that no longer work. S-Parameters not only describe device behaviour under linear conditions at microwave frequencies, they allow designers to extrapolate other performance parameters using standard equations.
