RISC microprocessor has on-chip SSL accelerators

10 March 2004 DSP, Micros & Memory News & Events Security Services & Risk Management

Renesas Technology Europe's SH7720 32-bit SuperH RISC microprocessor incorporates an SSL (secure socket layer) hardware accelerator for faster secure network connectivity. The device also features peripheral functions that include a colour LCD controller and USB interface. This makes it suitable for various kinds of IT and mobile devices that are equipped with a secure browser display function, such as Internet-compatible and IP phones, PDAs, digital TVs and network-connectable audio devices.

The SH7720 is a functionally enhanced version of the current SH7727. It achieves reduced power consumption through the use of special on-chip memory control circuit techniques. It has an SH3-DSP CPU core with a maximum operating frequency of 133 MHz and high processing performance of 173 MIPS. This makes it possible to implement high-speed communication processing, while an on-chip DSP supports various kinds of middleware, such as audio codecs and JPEG processing for still-image display.

The on-chip SSL hardware accelerator reduces the heavy CPU software processing load of 3DES common key encryption/decryption and RSA encryption public key/private key processing. Its comprehensive set of on-chip peripheral functions includes an LCD controller, USB interface, and a CompactFlash memory card interface.
