Connector enables fast data networks in aircraft

10 March 2004 Interconnection

Tyco Electronics has introduced ARINC Size 8 Quadrax contacts. This contact is a multisignal contact system employing two differential pairs (matched impedance) used with quad-axial cables for databus applications on commercial aircraft per ARINC 600, 664 and 763. The new product line consists of a four contact connector in a size 8 shell with PCB mount pins or crimp style pin and socket termination. It features an exclusive one-piece dielectric design which considerably simplifies the termination process.

In addition to commercial avionics, aircraft data networks and in-flight entertainment systems, this contact system can be used in military networking and communications as well as multigigabit applications like Gigabit Ethernet IEEE 802.3Z and Fibre Channel XT11.2.

The contact is designed to fit into a variety of aerospace and military connectors, including ARINC 600, ARINC 404, MIL-C-38999 and BACC65/EPX. It is important to note that this product is not only designed for industry standard connectors, but can also be integrated with custom connector housing designs. The contact uses four size 24 AWG, screw-machined contacts that can be crimped with standard tooling. A front release/front removable PCB mount contact is available for ARINC 600 receptacle connectors while a rear release/rear removal crimp contact is used in ARINC 600 plugs. The design employs proven hex crimp for shield termination. The gold-plated, copper alloy contacts are inserted into a 2 mm centreline, one-piece keyed dielectric to help with proper mating and alignment. A solder contact version is also available.
